I have no doubt been influenced (somewhat subconsciously since I don't
remember this passage) by Dr. Murry Johnson's description of the geographic
distribution of Painted Turtles in Washington from Northwest Fauna Number
Three, "Reptiles of the State of Washington (1954):"

"Found in or near ponds or stagnant waters of streams in the eastern part of
the state and down to the western part, following the Columbia River.
Occasional specimens are found scattered in the human population centers of
the western part of the state as their bright colors lead to their
acquisition as pets by tourists."
