Varied Thrush. I was totally flummoxed at the striking sight. Ignorant of what many birds look like, the names wagtail and wheatear bounced around in my excited noggin. I fired off a really cruddy phone photo of my camera's display to a couple of friends, then called one -- Jeff Kozma. He rapidly realized it was a Varied Thrush without the colors. Thanks yet again Jeff. I posted a photo on Flicker. It's still rough, but gives a hint.I don't know what the appropriate term is for this plumage. It seems carotinoids didn't make it into the feathers.I also found and photographed yet another Intergrade Northern Flicker that could very easily be mistaken for, or passed off as, a Yellow-shafted Flicker using my photos.
