Hans - we've seen this behavior many times at our home in Roy, especially with robins and many of the local sparrow species. It's been always in the morning with a heavy load of dew on the grass.

May all your birds be identified,

I observed a male Spotted Towhee thoroughly enjoying a bath in wet grass this morning! First time I have ever seen a bird bathing in wet grass!
