There are several active Purple Martin colonies in Whatcom County supported
by nest boxes. One can be found at Lake Terrell, a WDFW property, another
at Locust Beach on Bellingham Bay, and yet another on Semiahmoo Spit, near
the resort, at the far north end of an old cannery building. On 8/23 of
this year, a credible birder reported 83 PUMA at the Semiahmoo site which
established a new, all time, high count (eBird) for a single location for
that species in Whatcom County. Both the Locust Beach and Semiahmoo nest
box efforts were spearheaded by citizen efforts.
