As many as 4 million of the birds perished, half of Alaska’s entire pre–heat wave common murre population, according to estimates made by Renner and colleagues that appear today in Science. That makes it the largest documented animal die-off in modern history. Eight years later, Renner sees little evidence the population has bounced back, despite a return to normal ocean temperatures.”
