Yesterday on a whim, I decided to walk out to the observation blind at the rest stop halfway around the Refuge. As I enter the path I heard a unique song. I felt I knew it, but it was not quite right. I continued to walk not hearing it anymore. I walked out to the observation hut. Lots and lots of it contains Tree Swallows, Common Yellowthroats, Yellow rumpled Warblers and flushed a Wilson Snipe right by the path. Not much going on in observation small pieces b don’t forget blind bad light with the southeastern sun. On my way back I heard the call again and this time It was singing quite a bit so of course I pulled Merlin out and it matched the White breasted Nuthatch.(Pacific) This was the first for me west of the Cascades. I stood there for quite a while, trying to find it to take a picture and a local resident walked up and said “What a treat a White breasted Nuthatch.”
